Managing sustainability at Sobeys

Our goal is to integrate sustainability into every aspect of our day-to-day business activities. Today, our store and distribution centre operations teams and our facility development teams are at the forefront of our sustainability activities as they strive to manage and reduce power consumption and increase waste diversion from landfills toward recycling.

At the same time, we are developing programs to engage, educate and enable our employees to more fully integrate sustainability across our company. Consistent with our business structure, our regional and division operations drive the implementation of our sustainability strategy and environmental compliance.

Sobeys continues to make progress at integrating sustainability into our core business. During the past five years, we have raised our organization's level of awareness and understanding of sustainability through dedicated "share groups". The participants in these groups have come from our businesses' direct operations; often people doing leading work on sustainability. These groups have focused on our direct operations, consistent with our focus on what is most directly controllable by us, and in alignment with our national operational goals by 2013 on carbon footprint reduction and waste reduction.

Having share groups dedicated to sustainability was an appropriate initial phase for Sobeys. Now, in recognition of our maturing sustainability direction, we have transitioned into a second phase where we have integrated sustainability into core business processes for our retail store development and distribution and logistics teams. The evolution has been made possible by introducing the right mix of strategic focus, senior leadership understanding, visibility and accountability, with the supporting data capture, reporting tools and best practice sharing.
